Softball Sweeps Calvin in MIAA Home Opening Doubleheader

ADRIAN, Mich. - The Adrian College softball team hosted Calvin in the team's MIAA home opener on Tuesday afternoon. Paige Cubberly went 1-for-2 with two RBIs as the Bulldogs took game one against Calvin 3-1. Jaime Lightner and Chelsea Shellman led Adrian in game two as each recorded three hits as the Bulldogs won game two 5-0 to bring the team's MIAA record to an even 2-2 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game One: Adrian 3, Calvin 1

• Adrian scored the day's first run in the bottom of the 3rd when Cubberly singles down the left-field line and scored Ashley Lenington (0-2, BB) and Chelsea Shellman (1-2, BB). 

• The Bulldogs increased the lead to three in the bottom of the 5th after Cubberly made it home off a wild pitch to score an unearned run and put the score at 3-0, Adrian.

• Calvin cut the lead to two in the top of the 6th when Jessica Brasser (1-3, RBI) singled down the right-field line and scored Maddie DeGroot ().

• Adrian held onto the lead getting the three outs needed in the 7th to finish game one 3-1, earning the first win in MIAA play.

Game Two: Adrian 5, Calvin 0

• The Bulldogs got the bats going in game two, tallying 11 hits in game two.

• Adrian scored the first run of the game in the top of the third when Lightner (3-4, 3 RBIs) singled to right field and scored Shellman.

• The Bulldogs had the most offensive production in the fifth when they recorded three runs on three hits. Krista Lynch (2-4) started the inning with a triple to right field. Shellman got on base with a bunt single and then stole second, giving Adrian two runners in scoring position. Following a ground out, Paige VanAtta walked to load the bases with only one out in the inning. Lightner scored Lynch and Shellman on double to left center to put the Bulldogs up 3-0. Lenington scored on the next play, tagging up on Cubberly's sac fly to left.

• The final run was scored in the sixth when Destiny Rogers (1-2, RBI) singled to center field, scoring her sister Infinity Rogers.

TOP DOGS

Game One: Adrian 3, Calvin 1

• Cubberly (1-2), Bryanna Collins (1-1), and Shellman (1-2) each tallied a hit for Adrian.

• Lenington, Cubberly, and Shellman scored a run.

• Cubberly earned both Bulldog RBIs in the game.

• Cubberly (W, 2-2) started in the circle for Adrian. She pitched seven innings, allowed six hits, gave up one run, walked one and struck out three.

Game Two: Adrian 5, Calvin 0

• Lightner had three hits and three RBIs.

• Shellman (3-3) tallied two runs for Adrian.

Krista Lynch (2-4) added two hits and a run to the winning effort.

Kaitlin Lock (W, 1-6) earned her first win of the season. She pitched seven innings and allowed only one hit while striking out seven batters.

THE OPPOSITION

Game One: Adrian 3, Calvin 0

• Kaley Frank (2-3) led the Knights in hits.

• Mallory Hoatlin (1-1), Kayla Groen (1-3), Brasser (1-3), and DeGroot (1-4) each tallied a hit.

• Brasser had the team's only RBI; DeGroot had the only run.

• Anna Gernant (L, 9-4) pitched six innings allowing three hits and three runs (two earned). She walked six batters and struck out 12.

Game Two: Adrian 5, Calvin 0

• DeGroot was the only Calvin player to record a hit in game two.

• Paige Groom (L, 2-5) got the start in the circle for the Knights. She pitched six innings and allowed 11 hits, five runs, walked two batters, and struck out one.

• Anna Gernant pitched the final inning in relief, striking out one batter.

UP NEXT

• The Bulldogs travel to face Cleary on Saturday, April 8 for a doubleheader. Game one is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
