ADRIAN, Mich. – The Bulldogs met Alma College Wednesday evening for their MIAA opener of the 2014 season. The Bulldogs looked to fight off the Scots in a rematch of the 2013 MIAA championship game. The Scots came out hungry as they took an early 2-1 lead. The Bulldogs responded by taking a commanding 8-2 halftime lead and controlling the second 30 minutes as they eased to a 15-4 victory. This win puts the Bulldogs at 3-5 on the season and 1-0 in the MIAA.
The first half saw the Bulldogs take the early 1-0 lead as Hannah Early scored on a free position shot at the 28:41 mark. The Scots followed this as they scored the next two goals of the game to take the 2-1 lead over Adrian with 19:47 remaining in the half. Adrian would respond as they took over the game by scoring the final seven goals of the first half. TaShina Salas, Maddie Dugan and Brianna Plester each scored twice while Early added her second of the game to accompany two assists. The Bulldogs controlled the momentum heading into the break as they led Alma, 8-2.
The second half saw the Scots come out strong as they scored the first goal to cut the Adrian lead to five goals at the 19:58 mark. The Bulldogs would follow this by putting Alma away for good with five straight goals. Early added three more goals, Plester added her third of the game and Christine Campbell found the back of the net to leave the score at 13-3 with 5:20 remaining in the game. Alma would score once more but the Bulldogs scored the last two as Plester scored her fourth of the game and Lydia Reedy added another to secure the Adrian win, 15-4.
Jul Tehovnik (3-5) earned in the victory in goal as she made three saves and recorded two ground balls.
TaShina Salas scored two goals, added two assists, recorded six ground balls, and compiled three draw controls. Hannah Early scored five goals, added two assists, and recorded three ground balls. Brianna Plester scored four goals, recorded three ground balls and compiled 10 draw controls.
The Bulldogs will see action again Saturday, April 5 when they take on Calvin at East Grand Rapids High School at 1 p.m.
