ADRIAN, Mich. - The championship final of the Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference tournament saw Adrian College play a very strong defensive first half en route to a 11-6 win over visiting Carthage. The Bulldogs and Lady Reds were the top two seeds entering the tournament and played a very competitive final. Adrian improved to 17-2 overall and won their 12th straight game while capturing their second straight tournament title.
Adrian used a big first half to build a 6-1 lead after 30 minutes. Carthage scored first in the contest but then Adrian scored the next six goals heading into the locker room. Rachel Johnston tied the game at 1-1 on a free position shot for her 39th goal of the season. Olivia Duncan then scored three straight goals for Adrian to run her season total to 55 goals. Amanda Lambert added her 43rd goal of the season with two minutes left in the half. Duncan added her fourth goal of the half at 1:19 to give Adrian a five-goal lead.
Carthage and Adrian each scored five times in the second half. Adrian increased their lead to 8-1 scoring the first two goals of the second half. Lambert scored 54 seconds into the half and then Stacey Birlson scored her 27th goal of the year on a free position shot.
Carthage scored three man-up goals in the second half as Meghan Reynolds, Cassie Hoyez and Laura VonderHaar each was given two yellow cards and left the game. Adrian was never really threatened as Natalie Ceis scored with 1:26 left to cut the final deficit to 11-6.
Laura Finfrock had a very solid game in net for the Bulldogs. She made eight tough saves in the game. Johnston finished with two goals and two assists. Birlson, Reynolds, Hoyez and Newblom each had an assist for the Bulldogs. Adrian recorded 25 ground balls as Hoyez led the team with four.
