Johnston's Seven Goals Highlights 21-10 Win at Wittenberg
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The women's lacrosse team got seven goals from junior Rachel Johnston pushing her career total to 226 on Tuesday night as the Adrian College Bulldogs won 21-10 at Wittenberg to run their win streak to 13 games heading into the postseason.
The Bulldogs played a non-conference contest against the Tigers and outplayed them throughout the night. Adrian outshot Wittenberg, 36-22, including a 16-9 edge in the second half. Adrian saw Wittenberg turn it over 27 times and took advantage.
Adrian built a 3-0 lead in the first 2:56 of the contest as Mariana DiGiovanni scored the first two goals for the Bulldogs followed by one goal from Stacey Birlson. The reigning MWLC Player of the Week finished the game with two goals and eight assists. Her eight assists is the second-most in school history one game after breaking the record with 11 assists at Fontbonne.
Wittenberg scored the next two goals of the game to cut the lead to 3-2 and then Adrian scored four straight to take a 7-2 lead with 19:04 left in the first half. The Bulldogs led 13-4 with 5:28 to play in the first half before the Tigers scored the final three goals of the half to make it 13-7 at intermission.
The Bulldogs scored three goals in the opening 8:53 of the second half to take a 16-9 lead as Rachel Johnston scored two of her seven goals to start the second half. The Bulldogs then rattled off five straight goals down the stretch to lead 21-9 with 1:01 to play. The Tigers scored with 37 seconds left to make the final score 21-10.
Johnston had 11 shots in the contest to lead the team. DiGiovanni ended with four goals to push her career total to 130. Olivia Duncan added three goals and two ground balls. Amanda Lambert added five ground balls and a pair of goals to give her 166 career goals. Amanda Faraone played all 60 minutes and made seven saves in the win.
