FREELAND, Mich.--The Adrian College women's basketball team received 35 points for fifth place in the 2017-18 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association coaches' preseason poll, which was released on Wednesday afternoon.
The Bulldogs bring back three starters among nine returners off the 2016-17 squad that posted a 13-11 overall record, including 8-8 in the conference--only three games out of a postseason berth in the MIAA Tournament.
Sophomore guard Shannon Garvey is Adrian's top-returning scorer with an 8.8 point average while shooting 38.7 percent from the field in 22 starts. Junior Ashley Morris also averaged 8.8 points on 43.1 shooting while appearing in all 24 of the team's games last season. Sophomore guard Angelina Goosby contributed 4.6 points and 4.4 rebounds while starting in all but one of the Bulldogs contests. Senior Star Harris came off the bench with 7.3 points and a team-best 5.3 rebounds per game, but could see more of a starting role this winter.
Six recruits combined with nine veterans comprise a young Adrian roster that includes two seniors, three juniors, five sophomores and five freshmen. The 'Dogs were one of the best rebounding teams in the MIAA last season--second in both overall average (41.9 rpg) and offensive rebounds (14.9)--and look to continue that strength in 2018. They also ranked third with 9.5 steals and got to the free throw line almost 20 times a contest.
After a strong 2016-17 season culminated in Trine's first-ever NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship berth, the Thunder were the unanimous pick to repeat both their MIAA regular season and tournament titles in 2017-18. Trine received all eight possible first-place votes (teams cannot vote for themselves) for 64 points. Hope received the remaining first-place vote and gathered 56 points to rank second. Calvin garnered 50 points for third place in the preseason poll, while Albion tallied 43 points for fourth.
The Bulldogs tip off their 26th season with Coach Kathy Morris at the helm on Wednesday, Nov. 15, against Marietta College at home (6 p.m.) in the Merillat Sport & Fitness Center. Last season, Adrian won the Southern Ohio Shriners Benefit hosted by the Pioneers, defeating Marietta 89-84. Marietta finished 16-11 overall and 9-9 for fourth place in the Ohio Athletic Conference.
