OLIVET, Mich. – The Adrian College women's basketball team suffered its first MIAA loss after winning their first two games at home on Tuesday. The Bulldogs (2-4, 2-1) traveled to Olivet College (5-1, 3-0) and dropped a 66-62 decision to the Comets. Olivet won for the fourth straight time, while Adrian had a two-game win streak stopped.
Adrian had balanced scoring as 11-of-12 players scored in the contest. Raven Anderson came off the bench to score nine points on 3-of-6 shooting. Anderson also had six rebounds and two assists in 23 minutes. Amy Van Gessel also scored nine points and grabbed five rebounds in 29 minutes. Jasmine Byers connected on four field goals in 11 attempts and finished with eight points and six rebounds. Adrian outrebounded the Comets, 46-38, and have now held the edge of the glass in every game this season. Adrian also set a season-high for three-pointers (6) and three-point percentage (.429, 6-of-14). Casey Fougerousse and Nicole Boggs each were 2-of-4 from behind the arc.
Both teams shot under 30 percent in the first half as Olivet led 23-20 at the break. Adrian started the game on a 12-2 run in the first 4:44 as LaQwana Dockery scored five points. Unfortunately, she did not add another point for the rest of the game. The Comets quickly erased the deficit tying the game at 14-14 with 9:54 left in the first half. Adrian regained an 18-14 lead after a layup by Anderson and a pair of free throws by Antoinea McElroy. Olivet took a 23-20 lead with 2:08 left in the opening half and neither team would score for the rest of the half.
Olivet opened the second half with a 5-0 spurt to increase their lead to 28-20, but then Adrian scored the next eight points to tie it at 28-28 after three-pointers by Boggs and Fougerousse and a jumper in the paint by McElroy.
The Comets led for good in the second half as Adrian tied the game three times but could never take the lead. The Bulldogs kept it close as Olivet finally took a six-point lead at 44-38 with 7:54 left in the game. Adrian got within one point on three different occasions between the seven- and six-minute marks. Rachael Walker's three-pointer cut the lead to 49-48 with 5:59 remaining.
The Comets put distance between themselves and their visitors going on an 8-0 run over the next 1:27 to lead by nine at 57-48. For that point, Adrian managed to get as close as three points down 60-57 with 1:39 left after a pair of Angela Broggi free throws. Chelsea Ciba made a layup after an Adrian timeout with 1:14 remaining and then Kelsey Campbell and Ciba made four straight free throws to keep the Bulldogs from a comeback.
