PINK ZONE EVENT RAISES OVER $6,500 FOR HICKMAN CANCER CENTER
ADRIAN, Mich. – Adrian College's Women's Basketball Team hosted its Second Annual WBCA Pink Zone game February 5th to benefit Bixby Hospital and the Hickman Cancer Center. The event raised $6,577.69 to be donated to the Hickman Cancer Center to help patients with expenses that insurance does not cover. Such expenses include wigs and arm sleeves that prevent swelling.
This year's Pink Zone event recognized Breast Cancer survivors prior to the women's basketball game. Money was raised through a silent auction, t-shirt sales, a bake sale, 50/50 raffle, popcorn sales from Kalamazoo Popcorn, jewelry sales from Saving Second Base and monetary donations.
The WBCA "Pink Zone" initiative is a global, unified effort to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses and in communities. The campaign began in 2007 and more than 120 schools unified for this effort and helped make the inaugural year a success. In 2010, over 1,800 participants came together to surpass $1,045,000 in donations and reached more than 922,000 fans across the nation. Over 22 schools broke attendance records through their participation. Overall, the WBCA Pink Zone has raised nearly $3.3 Million, has reached almost 2.7 Million fans, and has unified over 4,700 participants in only four years.
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death for all women and the leading cause of cancer death in women between the ages of 20 and 59. In the United States, breast cancer is expected to be newly diagnosed every three minutes, and a woman will die from breast cancer every 13 minutes.
