MANHEIM, Pa.--Adrian College senior co-captain Zach Rieger (Hudson, Mich.) has been named a Scholar All-America by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, it was announced this week.
NWCA scholar-athletes are recognized for their achievements both in the classroom and on the mat, and nominated by their school's head coach. Rieger is among only 189 wrestlers representing 67 NCAA Division III men's wrestling programs who received the honor for 2017-18.
Rieger has compiled a 3.66 overall grade-point average as a secondary education major (social studies and teacher's education, with an English minor).
Last season, Rieger made his first appearance at the NCAA Division III Championships, posted a 24-9 record to quadruple his victory total from his sophomore campaign and 14 pinfalls. He led Adrian in wins, pins and points toward team score (65).
In 2017-18, he rewrote the Adrian recordbooks with a 38-win campaign (6 losses) and 18 pinfalls. In the recent NCAA awards, he lists 10th in Division III for the most pinfalls (and sixth in the least amount of time of 42 minutes, 53 seconds, as well as tied for third in Central Region pins). For most of the season, he was ranked among the top-20 wrestlers nationally in his weight class according to D3wrestle.com. He captured five Invitational titles and put together a 19-match winning streak from Nov. 30 to Jan. 27.
To earn Scholar All-American honors, a student-athlete must carry at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA for the previous full academic year. Transfers and freshmen are eligible if they've been in residence at their current institution beginning in the fall of 2016. On the competition side, wrestlers much be a national qualifier in 2016-17 and have a minimum win percentage of at least .500. Additionally, wrestlers can also be considered if they placed in the top six at their respective regional tournament, a win percentage of .500 or better and competed in half of the institution's scheduled competition in NCAA championship events. A wrestler can also be considered if they have a win percentage of .670 or better and competed in half of the institution's scheduled NCAA events.
Rieger has received NWCA Scholar All-America recognition three times in his Bulldogs' career.
