LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Adrian College men's volleyball team captured the Great Midwest Conference regular season and tournament title on Sunday at the University of Kentucky. The Bulldogs had a Play Day on Saturday and won three matches to propel them to 9-1 in the conference and earn a No. 1 seed in the tournament format on Sunday. "We had a very good day on Saturday after a tough tournament in Indiana," said head coach Jordan Timmerman. "It showed a lot that we could regroup and clinch the regular season title. I was just hoping that we could continue momentum into Sunday."
The second-ranked Bulldogs would indeed seal the tournament title after a dominant day starting with a 25-18, 25-15 quarterfinal victory over Miami (Ohio). In the semifinal Adrian got a rematch against Cincinnati who took them to three sets a day earlier. The team squared off with coach Timmerman's alma mater, Grand Valley State, and finished the deal with a 25-15, 25-20 trophy clinching win.
"Our team really came together this weekend and I want to emphasize team," commented Timmerman. "From our setter to hitters to blockers, everyone was on the same page. Drew Evans had a remarkable couple of days and we also got huge contributions from Spencer Simmons and Jordan Zickafoose. Spencer and Jordan were all over the net on blocks and made big swings in big moments."
The Bulldogs are now 30-14 overall and will come home to play three home matches from Mar. 13-15. The team will be presented its tournament trophy at the Mar. 13 match against Michigan State which begins at 7:30 p.m.
