ADRIAN, Mich. – The men's tennis team has kept their momentum going this season and picked up their 13th win of the season on Wednesday against Calvin College by the score of 5-4. The Bulldogs maintained second place in the MIAA with the win and are 4-1 in the league.
The key to this season's run has been doubles play and getting that early advantage. The Bulldogs won two of three to take a lead into singles. Michael Mertz and Spencer Georgetti picked up the first point with an 8-5 win at No. 2 over Matt Buesing and John Strikwerda. The top tandem of Jordan Verbauwhede and Joey Loselle also got a huge point with an 8-6 win over Loukas Peterson and Klaas Walhout.
The match was back to even as Ryan Delacy was no match for Buesing at No. 4 singles falling 6-0, 6-0. Mertz picked his teammate up at No. 3 with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Tom Griffin. It was Mertz's 14th singles win of the season.
Loselle entered the Adrian College record books with his 15th win of the season. He put the Bulldogs ahead 4-2 with his 6-2, 6-2 victory over Walhout. Alex Amos had a tough loss at No. 5 with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) decision against Strikwerda.
Troy Gargrave did not participate in doubles and that rest seemed to pay off at No. 6 as he picked up the clinching point with a 3-6, 6-0, 6-0 match against Stephen Healy. Verbauwhede went three sets at No. 1 and eventually fell 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.
"We struggled today on the courts, but the guys battled really hard," said head coach Adam Albertsen. "Getting Troy back in our lineup was great and it helped seal the match. After dropping the first set he bounced back and did not lose a game which was huge for the team."
The team's next match is Saturday, April 19 at 1 p.m. when the Bulldogs travel to Hope College.
