ADRIAN, Mich. - The maturation of the men's tennis program at Adrian College took another step forward on Wednesday with a 7-2 win over Alma College at Craft Tennis Complex in their first outdoor home match of the spring season.
The Bulldogs had another solid set of matches in doubles taking two of three from the Scots. The matchups finished in order of play as No. 1 doubles saw Jordan Verbauwhede and Joey Loselle beat Grant Hill and Bryan Schutte, 8-2, to earn the first point. Michael Mertz and Spencer Georgetti at No. 2 doubles picked up an 8-4 win over Logan Beard and Gordon Rumschlag. The duo improved to 8-1 together this season.
Adrian steamrolled through the first five singles matches en route to their 11th win of the season. Verbauwhede defeated Josh Gove at No. 1 singles in straight sets (6-0, 6-2) to set the tone for the Bulldogs. Mertz clinched the team's fourth point with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles over Hill. Loselle cemented the match clinching point at No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Beard.
Alex Amos claimed a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles over Jared Guy. The most exciting match of the day came at No. 4 singles where junior Ryan Delacy dropped the first set, 6-4, before coming back with a 6-4, 10-5 ending.
"This was a great win for the guys, we wanted to build off our previous matches and this was another step forward," said head coach Adam Albertsen. "Our doubles play was solid, but I feel what really helped us was the complete match on the singles courts 1-6."
Next match is Sunday, April 6 when the Bulldogs head to Angola, Indiana to face Trine at 1 p.m.
