Bulldogs Tie School Record with Ninth Win

DEFIANCE, Ohio - The men's tennis team tied a school record with their ninth win of the season this afternoon in a 7-2 victory at Defiance College. Adrian is now 9-3 and Defiance falls to 5-4.

The Bulldogs took the first two doubles matchups with identical 8-4 scores. Jordan Verbauwhede and Joey Loselle took care of Mike Ross and Ryan Nelson at No. 1 while Michael Mertz and Spencer Georgetti made quick work of Cord Speelman and Justin Walker.

"It took a little while for our guys to adjust to the different courts, but I thought we played pretty well in doubles," said head coach Adam Albertsen. "Mertz and Georgetti continued their streak and Joey and Jordan played very aggressive."

Adrian did not have many troubles in singles with five straight set wins. Mertz earned the third point for the Bulldogs with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3 over Nelson. Loselle picked up the fourth point with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 2 over Speelman. Verbauwhede clinched the winning point at No. 1 over Ross. He took the first set 6-1 and then fell behind 5-4 in the second set before rallying for a 7-5 win.

Troy Gargrave at No. 5 took it to Walker by the scores of 6-3, 6-0 and Garrett Livernois handled Tory Savage at No. 6 by scores of 6-4, 6-2.

"I am proud of all the guys and the fight they showed today," commented Albertsen. "Defiance played tough and made us earn each point, but I really like how our guys adjusted to the game and the courts and continued to play smart. We are playing well but know we still have work to do before we open up conference season against Albion next week."

The Bulldogs hit the road against MIAA rival Albion on Friday, March 28 at 4 p.m.
