ADRIAN, Mich. – The men's tennis team improved to 3-1 on Thursday with a 9-0 win over Bethel (Ind.) College. The match began with the team's playing singles first outdoors and then the match had to be moved indoors due to rain.
The Bulldogs had leads in the first five singles matches before moving indoors. The first five singles matches were all straight set wins for Adrian. Michael Mertz and Joey Loselle each improved to 4-0 in singles play. Mertz won 6-0, 6-2 at three singles and Loselle won 6-1, 6-3 at two singles. Troy Gargrave also improved to 4-0 but did so in comeback fashion. He dropped the first set 6-1 and then composed himself to post 6-2, 10-7 scores for the win. Alex Amos and Ryan Delacy also picked points in four and five singles respectively.
"The guys stepped up and did not let the switch from outdoors to indoors slow them down," said head coach Adam Albertsen. "Being the first time indoors it takes a little adjustment period, but the guys did not miss a beat. It was nice to see Ryan Delacy and Alex Amos get off to quick starts and play very solid matches from start to finish. Also proud of the fight Troy showed by picking up a huge win for himself after a tough first set."
Next up for the Bulldogs is a trip to Grand Rapids to face Cornerstone University on Wednesday, Sept. 25.
