Bulldogs crush Knights in MIAA men's lacrosse opener

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The men's lacrosse team (6-3) opened the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association with an 18-1 win over Calvin College (1-8) on Saturday afternoon.

Jesse Gilbert's first of three goals broke a 1-1 tie as the Bulldogs scored 17 unanswered goals off 37 total shots- of which 27 found the cage.

Jake Waldrup led the Bulldogs with seven points and four goals. Gilbert, Colton Brunk, and Nick Levanti all had four-point outings for Adrian.

Adrian was near perfect in faceoffs winning 19-of-21, and Ricky Razo registered his first win of the season with five saves.

The Bulldogs were 2-for-3 with the man-up and went 20-of-21 in clear attempts while holding a 32-23 edge in groundballs. Peter Treppa led Adrian with seven groundballs, while Frank Badalamenti, Lido Aldini, Zach Kozlowski, and Nathan Carroll each registered three apiece.

Adrian started and ended strong with six and five goals in the first and last quarters of the game, respectively. The Bulldogs took an 11-1 lead into the intermission.

Tom Thielman opened the scoring for Adrian just seven seconds into the contest. After Calvin tied the game, it took Gilbert less than two minutes to provide Adrian with a two-goal cushion at 3-1.

Matt Desveaux (two goals) and Brunck (one goal, one assist) would each add a couple of points before the end of the first quarter for a 6-1 lead.

It would take Jake Waldrup just 15 seconds to score into the second quarter and he would add another about eight minutes later for an 8-1 lead before Desveaux, Mitch Burgin and Levanti wound score in a five-minute span to end the half at 11-1.

Carroll and Waldrup would net the only goals of the third quarter. Waldrup would then get his fourth of the game just 25 seconds into the final quarter.

Zach Albiniak, Gilbert, Levanti, and Richard Smith would round out the scoring in the game's final six minutes.

Adrian continues on the road with a game against Hope College on Wednesday, April 10th at 7 p.m.
