ADRIAN, Mich.--The US Under-18 Team scored three goals in the first period and then had to withstand a valiant comeback attempt to clip the Adrian College men's hockey team by a 4-2 score in an exhibition contest Saturday evening at Arrington Ice Arena.
The Americans jumped out to a 3-0 lead on goals by Tyler Weiss, Joel Farabee and Patrick Giles in the opening 13 minutes and 56 seconds.
The Bulldogs, however, proved their mettle against a squad that features 17 National Hockey League prospects. Junior Bryan Yim scored a shorthanded tally at the 13:49 mark of the second period and senior Austin Rust had a goal to open the third period at 8:26 to make it only a 3-2 deficit.
The US iced the contest on an empty-net goal by Oliver Wahlstrom with 33 seconds remaining in the game.
Jonathan Mor had 16 saves for the U-18s while junior Kevin Entmaa gave the Bulldogs a chance with 30 saves on 33 shots he faced.
Adrian senior captain Mathew Thompson won 13 of 24 draws. Gavin Hain was 7-for-9, Jack DeBoer was 8-for-13 and Jake Pivonka went 9-for-13 for U18s.
The Bulldogs will open their 2017-18 campaign for real on Friday, Nov. 3, at Northern Collegiate Hockey Association foe Lawrence University. After a five-game road swing to begin the season, Adrian's home opener is against NCAA newcomer Trine University on Saturday, Nov. 18 (7:05 p.m.).
