Bulldogs Clinch MIAA Tournament Berth on Senior Night With 67-52 Win Over Alma

ADRIAN, Mich. - The Adrian College men's basketball team clinched a berth in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) tournament after a 67-52 win over Alma in the Merillat Sports and Fitness Center on Wednesday night. Senior Justin Webster led the Bulldogs to victory with 17 points and five rebounds in his final regular season home game in an Adrian uniform.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Alma scored the game's opening basket before the Bulldogs used a 6-0 run to gain the lead. Sam Colbert sparked a 6-0 run for Adrian with a jumper from three that helped the Bulldogs build a 16-9 lead with 11:37 remaining in the first half. 

Following a layup by Scott Maki for the Scots, Adrian would use a 5-0 run to create the game's first double-digit lead, 21-11, with 8:54 left before the half. The Bulldogs saw their largest lead of 11 (29-18) when Jordan Harris sank a layup with 5:12 left in the first. Alma ended the half on a 6-0 run that cut the deficit to just three points at the break.

Jeremy Kalonji made a layup that ignited an 8-0 run for Adrian the helped the Bulldog lead grow to 12 (43-31) in the opening 10 minutes of the second half. Adrian would spark three 7-0 runs before the end of the game to maintain the lead throughout the remainder of the game. The largest lead of the game for the Bulldogs was 19 (58-39) and happened with just 5:52 left to play.

Adrian finished the game shooting 43.1% from the floor, 35.3% from behind the arc, and 78.6% from the free throw line; Alma shot 38.0% (FG), 33.3% (3PT), and 77.8 % (FT).

TOP DOGS

• Webster was a perfect 3-3 from the foul line and added three assists and a block to his stat line.

• Harris hit three jumpers from three to score 16 points. He also hauled in three boards, had two assists, and three steals.

• Kalonji scored 15 points while pulling down six rebounds, two steals, and two blocks.

• Colbert tallied 10 points and led the team with seven rebounds.

THE OPPOSITION

• Kevin Scheibert led the Scots with 14 points and 15 rebounds.

• Scott Maki scored 10 points and had two assists.

MIAA STANDINGS

With the win, Adrian sits firmly in the third spot in the MIAA standings. The Bulldogs are guaranteed to be at least the third seed in the tournament.
