May 25, 2010

The American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) has selected the 2010 Division III All-Region teams and Adrian College has three players who are being honored this season in the Mideast Region.

Senior outfielder Alex Cowart (Dearborn, Mich./Edsel Ford HS) was named First Team All-Region for the third straight season and had his best year in 2010. Cowart ranked 14th in Division III with a .477 batting average and broke the Adrian College single season record in the process. Cowart also ranked 16th in Division III in on-base percentage reaching base 55.2 percent of the time.

"Alex is maybe the best player ever to play at Adrian College and repeating as a First Team All-Region player in the Mideast is a huge accomplishment," said head coach Craig Rainey. "The Mideast Region is one of the toughest regions in the country. All of Alex's long list of awards throughout his career goes back to two things, his outstanding dedication and work ethic to baseball. No player gives more effort to the game than Alex."

Cowart leaves Adrian College as the all-time leader in batting average (.420), hits (235), RBI (156), doubles (55), total bases (375), stolen bases (57), runs (164) and triples (14). In addition, he ranks second all-time in at-bats (560), slugging percentage (.670), home runs (19) and on-base percentage (.494). He was the Michigan Intercollegiate batting champion (.500) this season and has won the MIAA batting title the last three seasons. He is the all-time leading hitter (.440) in MIAA history.

Senior pitcher Josh Lancaster (Saline, Mich./Saline HS) and junior pitcher Ryan Domschot (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer HS) were named Third Team All-Mideast Region. Lancaster had a career year and was named MIAA Pitcher of the Year. Lancaster posted an 8-2 record with a 4.28 ERA this season and went 7-0 in the MIAA. He made 11 starts and threw two complete games for a total of 61 innings. He allowed 29 earned runs and 24 walks while striking out 40 batters.

Domschot is a repeat performer as he was named Second Team All-Region as a sophomore in 2009. In addition, he was named All-Region Gold Glove for his defensive work. Domschot posted a 6-2 record with a 3.04 ERA this spring for the Bulldogs. He was named First Team All-MIAA for the second year in a row and was the ace of the pitching staff. He made 11 starts and threw three complete games. Domschot threw 68 innings and allowed 23 earned runs with 29 walks and a team-high 72 strikeouts. He is currently 19-7 in his career at Adrian College with a 3.09 ERA. He ranks fifth on the all-time wins list, fourth on the all-time ERA list and tied for third on the all-time strikeout list with 193 punchouts.
