ADRIAN, Mich.--For the second time in program history, the Adrian College American Collegiate Hockey Association Division 1 men's team has won the Great Lakes Collegiate Hockey League championship tournament on home ice. The Bulldogs defeated Calvin in an overtime nail biter, 3-2, in the GLCHL Semifinals and then blew out runner-up Davenport, 7-1, over the weekend at Weston Rink in Arrington Ice Arena to claim their second-consecutive tourney title and fifth in school history (also 2012, 2014 and 2015).
The Bulldogs--who are currently 32-2 overall and 14-0 in the conference after sweeping the GLCHL regular-season and tournament titles last season--posted a 18-2 home record in Arrington's friendly confines.
Freshman Brenden Stanko wristed home the winning goal from the left face-off circle just 41 seconds into the overtime period to beat the Knights. Junior goaltender and GLCHL Tournament Most Valuable Player Michael Barrett turned aside 41 of 43 shots he faced. In the championship game, freshman defenseman Mason Vaughan notched three points on a goal and two assists and Barrett came up with 35 saves to pummel the Panthers, who spoiled the shutout bid in the second period after falling behind 4-0.
"Winning the playoff title is special for our group of players as we play in a very competitive league," Adrian third-year coach Gary Astalos, who has guided the Bulldogs to a 99-6 overall record, said. "We could see a team like nationally No. 7 ranked Davenport in the (ACHA Tournament) quarters or semifinals so it is a great test to prepare for the national tournament. Overall, I was very happy with how our team competed last weekend and we look to carry this momentum into Dallas next weekend."
Adrian is ranked third in the latest ACHA Division 1 men's computer poll behind Lindenwood and Michigan-Dearborn. The Bulldogs also won the GLCHL tournament when they hosted the event in 2011-12.
