ADRIAN, Mich.--The Adrian College ACHA Division 2 women's hockey team picked up its fourth consecutive win on Sunday to begin the season 4-0 after a weekend sweep over the visiting Loyola of Chicago Wolves at Arrington Ice Arena. The scores were 2-1 and 5-2 on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon, respectively.
On Sunday, the Wolves jumped out to a 2-0 lead before freshman Erika Gilbert cut the deficit in half with 57 seconds left in the opening period.
The Bulldogs put the game away with three goals in the second. Freshman Cristina Rotondo tied it 2-2 at the 2:20 mark on assists from freshmen Elizabeth Anderson, Kenzi Heisner, and freshman Maria Granger fed classmate Emily Letke for the game winner at 14:13.
In Saturday's narrow one-goal victory, freshman Katie Hayward scored the only goal of the first period, her second of the season, with an assist from classmate Cecilia Werner to give Adrian a 1-0 advantage at the first intermission.
The two teams would trade goals in period number two, with Whitney Knight scoring the equalizer for the Wolves, before Adrian freshman Hannah Chase would score the game winner midway through the period with assists from Anderson and sophomore Jessica Abraham.
The final period would belong to the goaltenders, as Loyola’s Julia Smith and Adrian’s Madison Drezek made several quality saves at each end of the ice in a scoreless third period. For the game, Smith made 19 saves for Loyola and Drezek made 24 saves on the evening in the Adrian cage.
Loyola is now 2-2 on the young season.
