OXFORD, Ohio - The Adrian College women's ACHA Division I team traveled to Oxford, Ohio on Friday night for the first game of their two-game series with the #1 ranked and defending national champion Miami RedHawks at Goggin Ice Center and came away with an exciting 1-1 tie.
Senior goaltender Emily Michelin (Highland, Mich.) was spectacular throughout the contest for Adrian, stopping 38 of 39 shots from the high-powered Miami offense and Adrian got a late third-period goal from Jacqueline Lough (Canton, Mich.) to earn the tie with the unbeaten RedHawks.
Neither team could pick up a goal through the first two periods, as Michelin and Miami goaltender Emily Willis kept the game scoreless until just 6:12 remained in the game, when Rachael Booth scored for Miami to give the RedHawks a 1-0 lead.
Adrian then caught a break, as the Bulldogs' Lough scored the equalizer on a power-play set up by a hooking penalty against Miami's Izzy Smith. Adrian's Lauren Hughes (Windsor, Ont.) picked up the assist on Lough's goal which would conclude the scoring for the night, as neither team could score the rest of the way of the period or in the five-minute overtime.
The tie was especially frustrating for the RedHawks, who outshot Adrian 39-8 on the night, but could not solve Michelin, who has now allowed just one goal in her last two games, which have included two overtime periods.
The RedHawks and Bulldogs will do battle again on Saturday when they face off at 5:10 p.m.
