PITTSBURGH--On the heels of picking up his first Northern Plains East Region Conference Pitcher of the Week nod on Wednesday, senior Mark Cash (Belleville, Mich. / New Boston Huron High School) also makes his debut as the National Club Baseball Association Pitcher of the Week for Division 2.
"It's great that our guys are being recognized on a national scale for their accomplishments," said second-year head coach Brent Greenwood '14. "I am excited to see what the rest of the season has in store for us and to see if we can get a few more guys on that list."
Cash earned the NCBA and conference's weekly award after throwing the first perfect game in Adrian College club baseball history during the NPERC opener on Saturday at Grand Valley State, leading Adrian to an 11-0 victory in five innings (after the 10-run rule). Forty-two of the left-hander's 70 pitches went for strikes, throwing mostly knuckleballs. He finished with seven strikeouts and saw only three flyouts leave the infield.
In the momentous fifth inning, Cash was one out away when he started with three straight balls to the third batter. But he buckled down by firing three strikes in a row to strike out the final batter and completing perfection.
"You could tell from the first inning Mark had something going as he needed only nine pitches to set down GVSU in order," observed Greenwood. "Last year (in our first season of existence) Kyle Stratton threw a no-hitter, which was awesome, but a perfect game is on another level! To have a no-hitter and perfect game within our team's first 35 games is pretty special.
Cash added, "It was a very great feeling because I've never thrown one before, and it really gave me a good feeling about how this season is going to go for our team. I want to thank NCBA for naming me national pitcher of the week; it's pretty cool to get recognition for club baseball."
Cash is the second Bulldog to receive NCBA weekly recognition, joining Shane Carney who was the Division 3 Player of the Week for Oct. 30, 2017, as a senior.
The 2017-18 NCBA Division 3 World Series champion Adrian Bulldogs are playing in their first season at the Division 2 level of the NCBA organization. Adrian will take a 4-2 record (1-1 in the NPERC) into a three-game weekend home series against conference foe Ferris State on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 20-21, at Nicolay Field
The NCBA, founded in 2000, is the national body that governs club baseball at colleges and universities in the United States, providing a national structure for non-varsity teams at the NCAA and NAIA levels. The organization runs the NCBA College World Series national championship series, compiles playing statistics, assists teams in fundraising, and arranges for discounts on baseball clothing and equipment.
